COCO B. WARE ...

Coco Puffs, Coco Loco, Coco Krispies, Coco Cay.
Our day to arrive in Coco Cay, the private mile of sand that Royal Carib. owns and lets it's guests party and swim and play on for a day, had come. Much to our surprise, Coco Cay is right next to Another Cay owned by Norweigan Cruise lines. We made it up to the Windjammer for breakfast, fought off a rude beyotch for a prime viewing table, and watch from the front of the ship as we sat in choppy water anchored about a mile off Coco Cay and Norweigan Cay and some Norweigan ship doing the same.

Shortly after breakfast, we went up to the view deck to snap some photos - and that would be the closest to Coco Cay that we would ever get. The seas were very choppy as another set of squalls was bearing down on us. The Capt'n gave the warning that we'd wait an hour to see if things improved, and if not we'd "head for Key West or do something."
Do something? You are driving a several hundred thousand ton ship - you don't just "do something".

Because the ship cannot pull up to a pier on Coco Cay, the way they get you to the island is to use the tenders - or life boats. Now these are not of the "near, far, wherever you are" Titanic version - easily capsized and rowed by non-trustworthy ships mates. Nope, these are ugly orange vessels completely covered so you dont go overboard.

The problem is trying to board one of these things is delicate enough, but when you mix in 12 foot waves, it is nearly impossible and rather disturbing to one's innards. Especially after filling your belly at breakfast.

So, we waited up top, Alyssa played in one of the puddles from the last rain and kept asking to play with the "ball" - aka the satelite equipment atop the ship. Then, the Capt'n pulled anchor and off we went. About 3 minutes later we were engulfed in yet another torrid downpour and the RizzFam just made it under cover in time to not get soaked. It was fun, but we left Coco Cay in our rear-view mirrors and set sail to "do something".

That something turned out to be the ship going like a bat out of hell to get out of the several squalls that had lined up to pound Coco Cay and Norwegian Cay and Cay Cay. That meant from 8am til 2pm, we were pounded by rain on and off again. At that point the sun broke through and our rain was a thing of the past. Jule too Alyssa to the pool for a while and I settled into a cozy slot in my room and watched the long anticipated UEFA Champions League final - Arsenal v Barcelona.

Much controversy just 20 minutes in as Barca got a breakway and the Gunners' keeper Leimann took out the Barca attacker outside the box for an automatic red card ejection. The problem is that the Barca player managed to get a pass off to another open team mate for an easy score in the process. By the rules of soccer, that advantage should have been granted and the score 1-0 in favor of Barca. Instead, the ref stopped play, issued the red card, eliminated the goal, and now Barca stood 20 yards out with a direct kick, against a 10 sided Gunners team, with a new keeper. Much differnt, and Barca did not convert the kick.

Soon after, an Arsenal player took a dive, was awarded a direct kick and Arsenal scored on the play - 1-0 to the team that should have been behind.
Nonetheless, the 11 vs. 10 matchup soon took its toll on the North London side and Barca scored two second half goals within 5 minutes of each other to earn the 2-1 victory and claim champions of Europe!

Too bad for ARRRRRRsenal. (I still like the pirate talk).
The two big stars - Ronaldihno for Barca and Thierry Henry for Arsenal played like the stars they are. Expect good things from both starting June 9 in the '06 World Cup.

Anyhow, so instead of a beach break and fun, we had a day at sea. Alyssa did very well considering - and got a bonus dose of AquaBabies up in the Explorer Camp rooms - meant for the teens. That place was something else. It converts into a teen disco each night, has pool tables, foosball, video games, dart boards, direct access to the basketball court and ping pong and shuffle board areas. They have unlimited juice, lemonaide, water, etc. Quite a setup for the teens and preteens.

Dinner was Italian night and the wait staff danced for us and sang "O Sole Mio!" even though only one member of the staff was Italian. A string ensemble went from table to table playing requests, and Jule and I joked about having them sing "Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy" a classic Wiggles song for Alyssa. Instead they played "Santa Lucia" - a classic Italian ballad.

So we survived the squalls and Coco Cay - and a day at sea. Lotta nothing out there.
Oh, they are playing "Shark Tale" and "Red Eye" in our rooms. So far I have caught the middle and now the ending of "Red Eye" - hopefully I can catch the beginning soon.
